I personally would start with an older set if you have a few bucks. They have a lot fewer cards in the set. For example the 1969 Topps set has only 664 cards compared to the thousands of cards in the 2007 Topps set.





You can buy cards from .30 or .40 for the commons to a couple hundred for the stars. Depending on the quality that you want you can complete the whole set for under $700. When you are done you have something worth keeping.





Even if you go back as far as 1951 Topps red backs... the cards are more expensive but there are only like 155 cards.





New baseball cards are like lottery scratch tickets. The only reason to buy a pack for $5 or $10.00 is the hope of pulling the randomally several hundred or thousand dollar card.

You can actually pick up new cards at Wal Mart or Target but your better off visiting a local card shop or going to a local card show.





Topps is by far the most popular brand for collectors and they go back to 1951. You could purchase the entire 2007 set in one factory box or you could build the set slowly by opening packs.





Also, You can start amassing cards and build some complete sets from years gone by and have a great time doing so.
