Did Bill Elliot have his name taken out of the running for most popular driver the year that Dale Sr. died?

Some time back I read something about this, but may not have it right. Also as I understood it, when Bill retires the award will be named after him?


He won it I think 16 times?

Yep you got it right on all accounts. Heck of a guy. I hope he gets at least 1 more win before he goes.
Reply:Wow, never heard that before. Between this and the really cool thing he did for Boris Said last season, Bill's one of the coolest guys in NASCAR.

Reply:Yes he did withdraw his name from the balloting and stated for all who were going to Vote for him to instaed vote for Dale Sr. as a tribute to him!!!! It was Srs 1st and only Fan Favorite Most Popular award!!!!

Reply:yes , he did withdraw his name that year and gave his votes to the late dale sr , hes one of the true class acts thats been in the sport and once he retires for good i for one am gonna miss him

Reply:... I had never heard this before but that is a very interesting bit of information. I like Bill Elliot the same as I do Mark Martin. I have a lot of respect for both of them. Great question.
